    I’ve possibly been gigging the night before so I’ll take things easy. My biggest inspiration in life has been Baloo the bear - I just look for the bare necessities in life. Enda, the bass player with An Emotional Fish, who sadly passed away in 2022, always called me ‘a lazy artist’. I am a beach bum at heart. I enjoy having less - you’re not going to take anything with you when you go. I’ll have a coffee and listen to The Business Show on RTE Radio 1 - it’s so well put together and entertaining.

    I’m an early riser. I get up at around 5 or 6 o’clock. The first thing I do is feed our dogs, Peanut and Teddy, and take them on their walk. Then it’s letting the chickens and ducks out, plus watering the plants and vegetables in the garden. I’ll have breakfast — I can’t wait for brunch as I’m starving as soon as I get up! I’ll eat anything I can get my hands on. That’s usually porridge, eggs, or toast. After that, the kids are up and getting them ready for the day begins.

    Born in 1955, artist Peter Monaghan grew up in Walkinstown in Dublin and studied at NCAD in the mid-1970s, going to work for several companies before establishing his own design business. In 2000, he gave up his job in design to become a full-time artist. As he celebrates his 70th birthday, a retrospective of Monaghan’s work is taking place at Gormleys Art Gallery in the capital.
