Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, arrived in the Armenian capital the previous night from Baku where met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The meeting took place the day after Aliyev renewed his threats to forcibly open a land corridor to Azerbaijan’s Nakhichevan exclave through Syunik, the only Armenian province bordering Iran. Official readouts of it did not mention the issue.

The position became vacant in early December after its previous holder, Ambakum Grigorian, was effectively dismissed by the newly appointed Justice Minister Srbuhi Galian. Grigorian ran the service for less than a year. Speaking ahead of his removal, Galian, who is also 32, said she plans to surround herself with “professionals who share my and my political team’s approaches.” She also replaced virtually all deputy justice ministers and the head of an agency enforcing judicial acts.

Pashinian claimed last month that all those plans considered by Armenia’s former governments were about “returning Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan.” He said that his “big mistake” was not to make this clear to Armenians after coming to power in 2018.
