    The IRFU is delighted to announce that Jonathan Sexton will take up a full-time position with the Union from Friday, August 1. As part of his expanded coaching role, he will work with the various Men’s and Women’s national age-grade teams up to senior level. Sexton has been working with the Ireland Men’s squad in a part-time coaching capacity since the 2024 Autumn Nations Series, and will step into an assistant coach role with this team.

    The IRFU can confirm that Erin King has unfortunately been ruled out of the remainder of Ireland’s Guinness Women’s Six Nations campaign and Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 after suffering a knee injury in last weekend’s match against England. King will undergo surgery in Dublin today and begin her rehabilitation process under the expert guidance of the IRFU Medical Team at the IRFU High Performance Centre.

    Following a planned review of its funding model, the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) is announcing an important update to the contribution required from the four Provinces towards the cost of National Player Contracts. Effective August 1st, 2026, the Provinces will be responsible for 40% of the cost of National Player Contracts, up from the previously set 30%.

    The IRFU was saddened to hear of the recent passing of William ‘Billy’ McCombe recently after a long illness. Billy played all his club rugby with Bangor after his time at Campbell College Belfast and Trinity College Dublin, and was a fly-half known for his prolific goal-kicking abilities. He picked up his first international cap as an 18-year-old (replacing the injured Mike Gibson) while playing for Trinity, and kicked all of Ireland’s points in a 16-6 defeat.
