    This story was originally published in July 2023. It’s three o’clock in the afternoon, and my friend Parker and I are waiting for the wind to drop.  We’re camping on a remote island in Upper Pierce Pond, Somerset County, trying to dodge wet summer weather and catch a few of the pond’s famed landlocked salmon. The shoreline around us is undeveloped and the other islands empty — we’re the only people around. It’s one of the rare dry days of late.
