University of Missouri–St. Louis Chancellor Kristin Sobolik and her cabinet continue to recognize the exemplary efforts of staff and faculty members from across campus by bestowing the UMSL Hero Award on up to three individuals each month. This month’s honorees are Johnna Murray, associate teaching professor of accounting; Rachel Thompson, guest relations manager at the Millennium Student Center; and Shawn Murphy, telecom network engineer for Information Technology Services.

Kyle Stallings grew up as a Lego kid. He owned plenty of Erector sets, too. Not only would he follow the instructions to build the intended structure, but the future engineering student loved to imagine what else was possible and use his creativity to go above and beyond. Sometimes, he admitted, that would result in a spectacular structural failure.

Emmanuel Morgan’s involvement with the University of Missouri–St. Louis started a couple of years before he enrolled in the UMSL/Washington University Joint Undergraduate Engineering Program in 2020. When he was a junior at Kirkwood High School in 2018, Morgan got involved with the Bridge Program – which has helped guide high school students through the process of making informed college choices since its inception in 1986 – and his eyes were opened to whole new possibilities.

When Max Hood looks back at his four years at the University of Missouri–St. Louis – he graduated with his BSBA with an emphasis in international business this May – he sees two very distinct versions of his college experience. “For the first couple of years, I went to school, I took my classes, and I left,” Hood said. “But I knew I wanted to do something more, and I saw that my friends weren’t leaving campus the same time I was leaving campus. Ruman Singh was working for investment bank UBS as a robotics process automation engineer when he decided it was time to make a career change. Singh had already earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in mathematics from the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology And Science–Pilani, one of the top schools in India, but the type of change he wanted to make meant going back to school again.
