As a longtime watcher of Loudoun United, having the team with a chance (even a marginal one) at their first franchise postseason berth is certainly heady stuff. In a way, there are a couple of fates that need to align for it to happen which make tonight’s game fun in a zen kind of way.

Sometimes you find yourself in one of those situations where, try as you might, things don’t work out for you. Sometimes those things shake out poorly, and other times, like Saturday against Rhode Island FC, they just don’t shake out if you’re Loudoun United.

Not only do can high level results overlook the underlying moments, but in Loudoun United’s case, show the growth that the organization has made. Before Saturday night’s game in Florida, Loudoun and the host Tampa Bay Rowdies played five times at Tampa’s Al Lang Stadium, losing four straight since their scoreless draw in the team’s first year. Moreover, Tampa outscored Loudoun 14-2 in those four games.

Occasionally things happen in life where you’re not able to do the things you want to do and for me, it was having the summer cold pass around the house and thus only getting caught up to Loudoun United’s road draw with Pittsburgh during the week (thanks CBS OTA provider!), but thanks to the East Coast getting soaked, I got a chance to check out Loudoun’s work against a Miami FC side that had not won a game in more than three months.

Days before they start a stretch of games across July and August where four of which are against the top half of both conferences, Loudoun United coach Ryan Martin maintains the same approach to this that has served the team thus far. “What we’ve really tried to do is look at the schedule in four game blocks and challenge the guys in (those) segments and keep the focus on what’s right in front of us now and not to get too far ahead of ourselves,” Martin said this week.

Courtesy Loudoun United Loudoun United usually started the preseason with an incomplete squad, one of many challenges that the MLS-owned USL affiliate went through as part of their inherent DNA. And when D.C. United would return home for their final preseason days in past seasons, Loudoun welcomed players like Kevin Paredes, Ted Ku-DiPietro, and Luis Zamudio into their fold, and the preseason, with a full squad, could be completed with a compressed schedule and a young group.

Photo by Michael Campanella/Getty Images Anel Advic from the Swedish news outlet Expressen reports today that D.C. United is interested in Ibrahim Sadiq, a 22-year-old attacker from Allsvenskan side Hacken. Advic first reported D.C. United’s interest in and eventual acquisition of Mohanad Jeahze from Allsvenskan side Hammarby, so he does have a recent history on hitting rumors of Black-and-Red players, though it remains to be seen how far along, if at all, D.C. may be on this.
