The Dobson Spring Folly kicked off on Friday afternoon at Dobson Square Park with its usual offering of carnival rides, arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, and live music at the amphitheater. Some folks were able to get out and take advantage of the event before the weather proved to be a little too much for the Folly and event organizers decided to call it quits a little early.

Mount Airy High School hosted the North Carolina Public Library State Quiz Bowl Finals on Saturday. Teams from the Surry Early College High School, Innovation Early College High School from Pitt County, and Lee Early College of Lee County participated in a wide-ranging test of knowledge with questions presented by quizmaster Brack Llewellyn. The home field advantage may have worked in the favor of the Surry Early College High School team which won the state title over the team from Pitt County.

The board recognized tennis coach and North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame member Janet Moseley and Phyllis Hinson who hit an epic milestone, reaching 50 years of service to the district.

The Surry County Sheriff ‘s Office announced Friday the body of a woman reported missing the previous day from the Mount Airy was found later the day of her reported disappearance. The sheriff’s office got a report that Danielle Lynn McCrary, no age or address provided, was reported missing on Thursday. According to a statement from Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt, deputies promptly contacted the Criminal Investigations Divisions and initiated efforts to locate the missing woman.

A former Surry Central High School student, 17-year-old Victor Perez, was the victim last week of a police involved shooting that has now made national headlines. With a little more than seven weeks left in the school year, Surry County Schools this week announced a leadership change, with Joseph “Joey” Hearl taking the reins from Shannon Duplessis on July 1 as principal at East Surry High School. District officials offered a warm welcome to Hearl who is moving over from Elkin City Schools. They said he brings with him a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to students’ success that he has gained from nearly three decades in public education.

Northern Regional Hospital recently announced it was in the market to find a strategic partnership that would help secure the hospital’s long-term sustainability. Part of securing that future is going to require settling up with the debts of the past including outstanding bonds, and putting up what is essentially a one-year debt service fund which can be drawn down if the hospital misses any payments.
