Hanalei Bay is on the northern shore of Kaua‘i, the fourth largest of the Hawaiian islands. Picture palm trees and lush river valleys, wild chickens whose feathers are flecked with turquoise. A cobalt ocean pleated by waves, pretty as the mind’s eye can imagine. When I visited, I didn’t see a lick of it. In fact, I saw nothing at all. Since I’m a blind traveler, my impression of a place doesn’t form from sights.
