June 6, 2024 Celia Giesey stepped toward the careworn and crumbling colonnade that stood guard at the entrance to Michigan Central Station. At 83 years old, she didn’t move as quickly as she used to, but the historic Detroit monument urged her forward. Excitement and trepidation clashed in sight of the entrance. For a moment, nostalgia carried her away.

Jeffers was a popular free agent pick-up earlier this month during a 16-game stretch between April 25 and May 14 where he hit .310/.382/.793 with seven home runs, 19 RBI, and 12 runs scored. Not too surprisingly, he cooled off quite a bit from there. Over his next 13 games, Jeffers hit .119/.229/143 with just one extra-base hit. Thursday was a return to form.

Outside of regularly churning over the last few roster spots on my teams, I’m patient to a fault with the majority of the players that I draft. More often than not, this approach is correct. + Breaking down notable hitting performances from yesterday’s games. Edouard Knock LifeEdouard Julien (MIN): 2-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI. Edouard Julien had an underrated rookie season in 2023. He played just 109 games but worked out of a platoon into an everyday role with a line of .263/.381/.459 and 16 home runs. His 31% strikeout rate was an area of concern and while little has changed in that area through the first month of 2024, there’s no reason to think he can’t improve quickly.

+ What should we do with these struggling players? It’s hard to believe that we’re already a month into the season. That’s a statistically significant chunk of time, and yet, it’s also practically meaningless. At this time last year, Marcel Ozuna was slashing .091/.206/.218. He finished the year with his first-ever 40-homer season and a very competitive .274/.346/.558 line. At the same time, Sandy Alcantara ended April with a 5.11 ERA and never really recovered.

No, this is Patrick. Patrick Bailey (SFG): 4-4, 2 2B, HR, R, 3 RBI. It’s truly a catcher’s paradise. Saturday’s games were a party—a big bash for the bopping backstops (say that five times fast). Depending on where you stand on Daulton Varsho’s eligibility, almost half of the players on today’s list are catchers. Of course, that’s no coincidence. I pick the list after all. Still, it’s impossible to deny the impact these players have on their teams.
