Jeph “Spinning Plates” Loeb. BATMAN #160 kicks off this week immediately following last month’s intriguing issue, giving us a little more context behind what we saw, where we’re headed, who else is involved, and what it all means. Jeph Loeb, the man spinning many plates at once, and not one falls. I’ve mentioned before that he may be my favorite Batman writer, and he continues to show why. A summer popcorn movie in comic book form is there to entertain, and the man is definitely delivering here.

THE LONG HALLOWEEN saga remains consistent. The latest chapter of this story, THE LAST HALLOWEEN, continues to push the story forward, while giving us some progress on what’s come before. Batman gives tough lessons to Robin. Catwoman is free from Ivy’s green. A Holiday killer is revealed (maybe?) while a new one enters the picture (maybe?). And Falcone money remains an important factor. Jeph Loeb. What else can be said about him? He’s a master Batman storyteller, always building and progressing.

To summarize BATMAN #159, all you need is the letter J:The Joker lives. Jason is pissed. The Riddler is jacked. There you go. You’re all caught up. Jeph (another J) Loeb did a masterful job last issue of taking us back to a classic Batman story: Joker goons (with the Joker eventually showing up) cause a ruckus, and Batman takes them down. It was an action-packed scene that delivered the goods and just felt like a throwback Batman comic.
