    On this day 80 years ago, the world celebrated Victory in Europe (VE-Day) and the end of the Second World War. “On September 10, 1939, which happened to be my birthday, Canada declared way on Germany,” recalled Joyce Peach of Port Morien, N.S.Peach was just 15-years-old when the good news came across the Atlantic Ocean that the war was over. She’s 95 now and, though she never thought she would mark the 80th anniversary of VE-Day, she still remembers the celebration on May 8, 1945.

    Some of Eskasoni First Nation‘s youngest girls got the afternoon off school Monday to learn more about a dark chapter in their people’s past and present. “We’re here to walk in memory of the Mi’kmaq missing and murdered,’ said Elaine Young, principal at Eskasoni’s Mi’kmaq Immersion School. The Red Dress Walk around Goat Island in Eskasoni - Nova Scotia’s largest Mi’kmaq community - was led by the school’s Grade Four drum girls.

    The annual Great Cape Breton Clean Up takes place Saturday with hundreds of people coming together with volunteer fire departments to pick up as much trash as possible.
