This past September, experts and policymakers from around the world converged for Climate Week NYC, an annual event held in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly, to talk about the increasing impacts of global warming and to strategize about how to reduce the emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause it. Until fairly recently, food and agriculture were largely left out of these conversations, but this year was different, both at the conference and in the media.

For most people, choosing a cooking oil depends on taste preferences, intended use or health considerations. Richly flavored oils like extra virgin olive oil or unrefined coconut oil are best saved for uses where that flavor shines through, while more refined options, like canola, are useful for things like frying, inclusion in baked goods, or other times you don’t want to impart too much flavor to the food.

In the last month, the Environmental Protection Agency announced two major shifts in the federal approach to managing the class of chemicals known as PFAS. The first set limits for several of the PFAS that most commonly pollute groundwater and designated $1 billion to help states test both public water systems and private wells, with additional funding available for treating contamination.

In March 2023, Florida lawmakers passed a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to develop or sell lab-grown meat. The initiative joined a growing number of similar efforts from conservative lawmakers around the country, with lawmakers in Alabama, Arizona and Tennessee all introducing similar bills.
