The Flames have killed off 52 of 60 opposition advantages since the 4 Nations Face-Off break, and they’ve scored as many shorthanded goals over the past 10 games (1) as they’ve allowed power play goals (1). Huska credited the work interim assistant coach Trent Cull has done with the penalty kill for helping “compress” the group’s coverage and making the chances they allow be more predictable for their goaltenders. “It’s been very good since Four Nations,” said Huska.

Heck, the Sharks got most of the early shots and scoring chances, and even opened the scoring. A right shot centre, King is currently 23 but turns 24 this summer, so he can only sign a one year entry-level deal with the Flames. Seravalli is reporting that his deal won’t begin until the fall, and he’ll be joining the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers (presumably on an amateur try-out deal) for the remainder of this season. A Lake Bonavista kid, King played hockey in the Calgary area until 2019-20, when he joined the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles.

The 19-year-old Mews is a right shot defender from the Ottawa area. He was the Flames’ third-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft. He broke into the Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67’s in 2022-23, and in three seasons he’s progressed pretty consistently each season.

The Calgary Flames were watching Saturday night’s out-of-town scoreboard hoping that the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild would both lose in regulation. That didn’t happen, but the Flames remain alive in the playoff race. For now. Standings after Saturday’s gamesOn Saturday night, the Blues lost in a shootout to Seattle (gaining a point) and the Wild beat Vancouver in overtime (gaining two points).
