It's somewhat rare for a horror movie to be treated like a must-see cinematic event on the level of an "Avengers" film. We're talking about the likes of 2017's "It" and Jordan Peele's "Us," i.e. the biggest of big that the genre has to offer. Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind "Black Panther" and "Creed," has now managed to position his new vampire movie "Sinners" as one of these blockbuster-level cinematic events, and with good reason.

The 2025 summer movie season is nearly upon us, and it's quite stacked. The first quarter of the year had its ups and downs, but mostly, it was disappointments littering the road as Hollywood faced another rough start in the pandemic era. Fortunately, things have turned around in recent weeks, with the likes of "A Minecraft Movie" and "Sinners" posting big numbers. Ryan Coogler, the director behind "Black Panther" and "Creed," has proved himself as one of the most valuable and beloved directors in Hollywood. To put it lightly, it was a huge weekend at the box office, particularly for horror. While the genre can often be a reliable moneymaker, much of that has to do with the fact that the movies are typically made on the cheap, making it a relative game. It may not necessarily get the credit it deserves, but it's hard to find a more successful spin-off in the 2010s and beyond than that of "Young Sheldon." Serving as a prequel centered on Sheldon Cooper from "The Big Bang Theory," the series enjoyed a healthy seven season run on CBS before going off the air in 2024. One big difference is that the prequel is more of a single-camera sit-com format, whereas the flagship show was a multi-cam, filmed in front of a live studio audience sort of thing.
