Feb. 21—Willapa Valley kept its season alive and earned a trip to the state tournament as we review Thursday's prep basketball district-playoff games on the Harbor. ~~~GIRLS PREP BASKETBALLWillapa Valley 45, Naselle 39Willapa Valley rallied to punch its ticket to the state tournament with a 45-39 1B District 4 elimination-game victory over Naselle on Thursday at Raymond High School. The Vikings (13-10 overall) got off to a poor start as the Comets (12-9) led 16-7 after one period of play.

Feb. 19—Montesano secured an impressive fifth consecutive trip to the district-championship game with a 67-50 win over King's Way Christian in a 1A District 4 Tournament semifinal game on Tuesday in Montesano. The Bulldogs (17-6 overall) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead by befuddling the Knights (15-5) with a suffocating press defense. But KWC rallied to take a 17-11 lead after one quarter on a buzzer-beating jumper by senior guard Bridget Quinn.

Dec. 6—What started as a festive early-season matchup between two Twin Harbors teams took a worrysome, somber tone by game's end. Montesano defeated Aberdeen 42-21 on Thursday at Montesano High School, but the final score was the furthest thing from the minds of all those in attendance.

Nov. 20—Aberdeen senior midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte and freshman defender Hana Lessard earned First Team honors as the 2A Evergreen Conference announced its all-league team for the 2024 season. Lecomte, the Bobcats' leading goal-scorer this past season, was named to the First Team as a midfielder while Lessard earned a First-Team nod as a defender in her first year of varsity experience.

Nov. 20—Aberdeen senior softball pitcher Lilly Camp made it official by signing a National Letter of Intent to play for Grand Canyon University after graduation. Family, friends, coaches and teammates attended a signing ceremony for Camp on Tuesday at Aberdeen High School. Camp, who verbally committed to the Phoenix, Arizona school last spring, had led Aberdeen to two-straight appearances in the 2A State Tournament and is considered one of the top pitchers in the class heading into the 2025 season.

Nov. 19—Two of Montesano's super seniors shared the top honors as the 1A Evergreen League announced its all-league team for the 2024 season. Bulldogs setter Karissa Otterstetter and outside hitter Kaila Hatton were both named League MVP after leading Montesano to the league title this past season. Hatton was one of the team leaders in kills and digs while Otterstetter was one of the league's top assist leaders and filled up the stat sheet on a nightly basis this past season.

Nov. 13—At last season's WIAA 1A State Girls Cross Country Championship, local running fans got a glimpse of the future of the sport on the Harbor as Montesano's Haley Schweppe placed fifth overall a week after winning a district title. The water-cooler buzz regarding the Bulldogs freshman was she was going to be a state-title contender throughout her prep career and may win the elusive championship one of these years. We didn't have to wait long.
