Summertime is about to get much sweeter in Old Town Greenwood. This Saturday, live music will drift among the historic buildings and quaint shops downtown. Food trucks and local vendors plan to set up to cater to the crowds. Old Town businesses are opening their doors to show off all of the eclectic, one-of-a-kind items and services they offer. And serving after serving of strawberry shortcake will find its way to the hungry festivalgoers.

One word sits at the heart of the Greenwood Pride Festival — community. People flock to Woodmen Park each every June for loads of family-friendly entertainment, live music from area bands, more than 160 vendor booths and much more. Parents bring their kids to get their faces painted, have their hair glitter-ated and to ping-pong inside the bounce houses. Nonprofit groups and other resources are available to address a wide variety of health and other concerns.

They started as friends. They’ve grown into family. Sarah Taylor and Tempi Greenfield have gotten together multiple times a month for more than six years. They celebrate birthdays and special occasions together, and on Christmas, Greenfield comes over to bake cookies, then drive around to look at the lights. Greenfield envisions Taylor being at her wedding someday and staying part of her life for a long time. And it all started with a chance match through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

We made it. Sure, it wasn’t always easy. There were moments of frustration and difficulty, stumbles and hiccups along the way. But there were also great successes, unparalleled achievements and mettle-making experiences. Anthony finished up his last day of third grade this week. He had been counting down to the moment for weeks now, dreaming of lazy mornings lounging on the couch and summertime fun with his buddies.

Every decision had to be made with a keen sense of fashion. Clothes were carefully considered, some going in the cart, others back on the racks. The perfect graphic t-shirt, flowy warm-weather top, jeans that fit just right — these were decisions that could start the summer out rightTwenty-six teens had come to the Kohl’s in Greenwood on Tuesday for a special shopping spree. Each was currently in the foster system and rarely had the opportunity to buy new clothing.
