Piece by piece, the potential for a better quality of life came together. Lumber was measured, cut, screwed together and assembled at seven homes around Johnson County on Friday. More than 70 bundled up volunteers shook off the cold to place pieces in the right place, leveled out the ground and worked together with expert guidance from Servants at Work, or SAWs.By the end of the day, each of the seven locations would have a new handicap-accessible ramp.

With voices raised, they’ll make sure they cannot be ignored. During the annual Take Back the Night event, participants will loudly bring attention and awareness to the pervasive scourge of sexual violence. Survivors will share their own stories, and people will hoist signs and chant slogans making their way through downtown Franklin. The only way to stop sexual violence is to meet it head-on.

The pajamas haven’t come off all week. A rut has formed in the couch cushions. Enrichment has been at a minimum. Anthony has been in the throes of a Spring Break Slumber. His week off from school has been a masterclass in inactivity. Taking full advantage of the school-less days, he’s slept in, lounging around and following his own, very flexible, schedule. We’ve given him that leniency. After a hard few months of school, we figured a refresh would do him well.

For the past seven years, the Smalls have welcomed foster children into their home. Every day brings something different — which only makes life more interesting.

Johnson County Community Foundation creates Masonic arches restoration fund

For more than 100 years, the arches at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin have been a well-loved symbol of the community. The announcement in 2024 that the arches were damaged and would have to be demolished shocked, saddened and angered many local residents. Through a newly created fund at the Johnson County Community Foundation, supporters have a chance to restore the historic brick-and-stone structure.

Nonprofit organizations are critical components of the Johnson County community. Agencies provide everything from early childhood education to assistance to people facing homelessness to food for the hungry. By offering help for the variety of needs people experience, these groups fill countless gaps that people would otherwise slip through. Bur for all of the good they do, the leaders of nonprofits rarely receive the recognition they deserve.

In the broad brush-strokes, earthy color schemes and expansive point of view, the fine details of rural life come alive. The smell of a freshly plowed field and rising dust, the rustle of the wind through growing fields, the drift of clouds over a wide open homestead — Roy Boswell has built his artistic vision on the experiences and imagery from his upbringing on a family farm. Being able to share his family heritage through his painting is incredibly rewarding, and he hopes inspiring to viewers.
