Piece by piece, the potential for a better quality of life came together. Lumber was measured, cut, screwed together and assembled at seven homes around Johnson County on Friday. More than 70 bundled up volunteers shook off the cold to place pieces in the right place, leveled out the ground and worked together with expert guidance from Servants at Work, or SAWs.By the end of the day, each of the seven locations would have a new handicap-accessible ramp.

With voices raised, they’ll make sure they cannot be ignored. During the annual Take Back the Night event, participants will loudly bring attention and awareness to the pervasive scourge of sexual violence. Survivors will share their own stories, and people will hoist signs and chant slogans making their way through downtown Franklin. The only way to stop sexual violence is to meet it head-on.

The pajamas haven’t come off all week. A rut has formed in the couch cushions. Enrichment has been at a minimum. Anthony has been in the throes of a Spring Break Slumber. His week off from school has been a masterclass in inactivity. Taking full advantage of the school-less days, he’s slept in, lounging around and following his own, very flexible, schedule. We’ve given him that leniency. After a hard few months of school, we figured a refresh would do him well.

Call it the assist of a lifetime. During his 46 years as a high school basketball coach, Cliff Hawkins preached the importance of teamwork and working together to find success. The former Center Grove High School coach drilled into his players the values of being there for others, of adding positivity to the world. Hawkins has touched countless lives with those lessons. And when he needed it most, one of those people came back around with a selfless sacrifice for him.
