Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie has weighed in on the topic of Alberta separation as Premier Danielle Smith announced this week that she's open to having a separation referendum on the ballot in 2026. While Smith has said she doesn't support separating Alberta from the rest of Canada, she noted Albertans have genuine grievances with the federal government and wants concessions from Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Over 800 special ballots cast during the recent federal election were mistakenly kept at the office of a returning officer in B.C. - including one from Airdrie-Cochrane. Elections Canada announced that all registered political parties have been informed that 822 special ballots cast by electors in 74 electoral districts across the country were left with the returning officer in the riding of Coquitlam—Port Coquitlam.

The proposed expansion has been contentious, with expansion application permits halted by Rocky View County (RVC) following a series of concerned voices, who ultimately brought it before the LPRT at the beginning of this year.

The Bearspaw Marina's future was debated at a lengthy public hearing by Calgary City Council on Tuesday, May 6. The controversial marina sits on a floating dock on the edge of the reservoir, a segment of the Bow River just outside northwest Calgary limits in Rocky View County. It was installed last summer by Rick Skauge as an independent business that rents out canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards to people along a beach area near Haskanye Legacy Park.
