Social media is filled with people promising that returning to an earlier state of human existence will have physical and mental benefits. Whether it’s eating raw organ meat, getting into sourdough starter, or moving like primates, you don’t have to scroll around much to see what I’m talking about. Some of these influencers have been publicly discredited; while others have started movements and begun lucrative businesses on the social media brands they’ve built.

On Sunday February 9, 2025 the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Travis Kelce will be there. Taylor Swift will no doubt be cheering him on. A mom in Georgia was recently arrested and charged with reckless conduct after her ten-year-old son was found walking less than a mile from her home. I can’t stop thinking about it. Many of us grew up riding our bikes around the neighborhood and walking with friends to the lake down the bike path. Even now, with a two-year-old, I wonder how much freedom is good for him: Is it OK if he wanders around the upper area of our farm, where I can mostly see him and hear him when the window’s cracked?
