The year Krzysztof Kieślowski’s The Double Life of Véronique premiered at Cannes, I was born one minute before my brother. “That’s not me,” Véronique says, looking at the photo she’d unknowingly taken of Weronika on a trip to Kraków, “That’s not my coat.” For a long time, I looked at that minute between my brother and I like Véronique looked at Weronika’s coat: as evidence that we were not the same.
