1. IntroductionAs the second most abundant intracellular divalent cation, magnesium (Mg2+) is essential for cell functions, such as ATP production, protein and DNA synthesis, protein activity, and mitochondrial function. Mg2+ is a co-factor of hundreds of enzymes, including ATPases, endonucleases, exonucleases, polymerases, and phosphatases [1]. Mg2+ is also a calcium (Ca2+) antagonist, playing an important role in regulating Ca2+ homeostasis and function [2,3].
