One thing I’ve learned to appreciate about Substack is that I can carry on for as long as I’d like. Today, I released a song called “Michael Told Me” from my new album, and the truth is that even the opportunity to speak in long form about it here feels constraining. If I had it my way, I would take all of you on a drive through my town of Murray, and walk you all into the back yard of an old rental house I lived in to see if the blackberries were coming in.

“Snapping Turtle” (Official Music Video)I am very excited today to debut “Snapping Turtle,” the latest offering from my new album Planting by the Signs. I’ve also got a beautiful and miraculous video to share, directed by Elaine McMillion Sheldon. More on that below. But first a little bit on where this song came from…For some reason, I want to say I was around 14 years-old when I was asked to drive my Daddy’s truck from our house to the Lower Bottoms.

Studio BTS by Ryan HarlteyI’m releasing a new single, “Snapping Turtle,” next Wednesday, May 14. During the recording of Planting by the Signs, I had my talented friend Ryan Hartley film the entire studio process. Before I left for our Australian tour, I had him bounce all the files to a hard drive so that I could look over the footage during my downtime.

Last year, after the boys and I finished up with a short run across the pond, I stayed behind and spent a little time in Spain. My flight home was on one of those budget airlines. Despite what it lacked in amenities, it made up for in character. That was one of the only plane rides of my life where I KNEW someone had lit up a cigarette, and to be honest, I don’t blame them. The thing had no internet and you were only allowed two beverages the entire flight.
