A retired deputy manager from Indian Oil Corporation, he is recovering from knee surgery performed seven months ago. He lives with his wife in Chromepet and receives a Rs.5,300 annuity from Life Insurance Corporation. Dependent on his children for most needs, he tells Frontline that people often forget about seniors like him.

“We have no hopes of seeing our college campus before we graduate,” said Srinivas, a third-year MBBS student from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) college, Madurai. Standing in one of the classrooms on the fifth floor of Government Ramanathapuram Medical College (GRMC), where three MBBS batches are currently accommodated, he told Frontline that he and his classmates were “disappointed” about not receiving the “AIIMS college experience” they were expecting.

The latest hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu (TN), in which 61 people died after consuming methanol-spiked moonshine, has triggered State-wide concern over the rampant availability of illicit liquor. On June 24, The Hindu reported that over 100 people were admitted to government hospitals in Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Salem, and Puducherry. Inadequate policies and the ineffectiveness of local authorities in curbing the sale of hooch have come to the fore.

Zha Family Salon’s second branch opened in Gandhimaa Nagar, one of Coimbatore’s premier commercial localities, on May 26. Less than a month after its opening, business has picked up. A pre-teen boy is getting a haircut when Kausalya Shankar, the salon’s 27-year-old owner and founder, walks in with a box of newly delivered hair products. Sporting a neat bob, Kausalya sits in front of a shampoo washbasin and places a hose inside.
