Very recently, I watched the Bachchan vs Dhankhar showdown during a Rajya Sabha session. The treatment of Jaya Bachchan, an actor turned politician since 2012, and a 5th time elected MP from Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha at the hands of Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, 14th vice president of India was appalling. Jaya Bachchan was elected from the Samajwadi Party (SP).

The recent case of the rape and killing of a female trainee doctor in the premises of Kolkata’s prestigious R.G. Kar Hospital has drawn all India attention to the murderous hazards that women medical practitioners including nurses, face in our hospitals all over India. There have been several incidents of their harassment by their male seniors in their places of work, and also by relatives of patients who feel aggrieved by what they allege as ill-treatment in different parts of India.

On 15th August 2024, India marks its 78th Independence Day. Six days earlier, a female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata, was brutally raped and murdered in a seminar room on the fourth floor, where she had gone to rest during her night shift. Her semi-naked body, splattered with blood, was discovered in the morning. This Independence Day, one needs to talk not about the glory of the nation but about the subjugated carcasses that have gone into its making.

Three new criminal laws, passed without debate in the absence of 146 suspended opposition members, who represented 24 crore people of this country, in the previous Parliament on 20 December 2023, have replaced the old laws from 1 July 2024. There has been a strong reaction across the country against these three laws and a large section of legal experts and advocates, includng the opposition parties, had demanded to postpone its implementation for the time being and hold wide consultations.
