Between midterms and meal swipes, many UF students are also navigating a quieter challenge: Lent. Observed by Catholics for centuries, Lent marks the 40 days leading up to Easter, often involving prayer, fasting and personal sacrifice. On campus, Catholic Gators are participating in personal and sometimes unconventional ways, giving up social media, meat, music and more. For Mara Hoffman, a 20-year-old UF statistics sophomore, the sacrifice was digital.

The first time Zerrin Martin saw an orchestra on television, she was mesmerized. The cellists and violinists on stage seemed to hold a kind of magic, and she knew even at 2 years old she needed to be a part of it. She begged her parents for music lessons, and soon, she was at the piano, her tiny fingers dancing across the keys. Little did she know, this was just the beginning. Her love for music was unwavering, but at 11 years old, life threw her an unexpected chord.

Over 20 students gathered at the Plaza of the Americas Feb. 18 on an array of bright, multi-colored quilts. Students of different majors and backgrounds flicked cards onto the UNO pile, twisted their bodies into seemingly impossible knots on a Twister mat and sketched out absurd prompts in a game of Scrawl, a quirky take on Pictionary. Cracking vinyl records spun from a record player connected to a mobile power source.
