Sabrina Ullman: Monday night rain will help the air quality

Smoky skies will persist through the night and for most of the day Monday. An Air Quality Alert is in effect for the entire state of Minnesota as well as the U.P. until 6 pm Monday. Widespread air quality issues are expected as more wildfire smoke enters the Northland tonight and tomorrow. Overnight lows will be in the 50s to low 60s. Monday will be hot, with highs mostly in the upper 80s. We could see a few record highs broken, particularly in Duluth and Hibbing.

After a pleasant day with wind off the lake keeping temperatures cooler and wildfire smoke at bay, conditions will change tomorrow. For most of Minnesota, an Air Quality Alert is in effect until 6 pm on Monday. St. Louis, Carlton, Lake, and Cook Counties currently have a break from any alerts, but an Air Quality Alert for that area will be in effect from noon Sunday to 6 pm Monday. The Air Quality Index is expected to reach the “Red” level by Sunday afternoon, which is unhealthy for everyone.

As northwest winds stay strong today, wildfire smoke will become an issue for most of the Northland. An Air Quality Alert is in effect for the Arrowhead region until 6 pm, for the U.P. until midnight, and for all of Wisconsin until 6 am Saturday. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the low 80s. There is a chance of light showers with under 0.05” of accumulation. Tonight will have lingering, patchy smoke and overnight lows in the 40s to low 50s. Winds will become easterly by Saturday morning.
Congdon Park Elementary hosts bike rodeo as part of bike safety awareness effort

Many kids enjoy biking, and Congdon Park Elementary School in Duluth takes extra steps to make sure their students stay safe. This includes a Walk to School event each fall, a Bike to School event each spring, and an annual bike rodeo at the school. This year’s bike rodeo was held on Wednesday, with hundreds of families enjoying the tire checks, obstacle courses, tabling, and food trucks.
Students participate in wolf pup survival study

Wolves have been a hot topic in recent years, as some remain concerned about the number of wolves in the Northland. Public interest has spurred research on a variety of wolf-related topics, such as the population size and location. Mike Schrage has been the Wildlife Program Manager for the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa for 30 years. More recently, he’s been working with wolves.

There may be a few pop-up showers this evening, but we will otherwise have a quiet evening. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 40s. A light east wind will continue for the next couple of days. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with afternoon highs in the 60s to low 70s. There is a chance of rain, mostly after 3 pm. Showers will be widespread, but there will not be much accumulation with this round. Light rain may continue into early Wednesday, particularly in northern Wisconsin.
Safe Bay in Duluth temporarily closed

Less than two weeks after being approved by the Duluth Planning Commission, Safe Bay is now temporarily closed until an appeal is heard by the City Council. The Safe Bay program in Duluth allows those living in cars to park overnight at Vineyard Church. Safe Bay began shortly after the Duluth Planning Commission approved an interim use permit (IUP) for an interim outdoor living site on May 13th.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with overnight lows near 40 degrees. A light east wind will continue to stay light for the next few days. Memorial Day will be mostly sunny. Afternoon highs will be in the 50s close to Lake Superior and the low 70s elsewhere. There is a chance of light rain Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. This round will clear fairly quickly with sunshine returning on Thursday. Temperatures will reach the upper 70s and low 80s by the end of the week.

There is a slight chance of pop-up showers early this evening. Otherwise, it will be a quiet night with overnight lows in the 30s to low 40s. A Frost Advisory has been issued for some areas, in effect from 1-8 am Sunday. Patchy fog is possible after 1 am. Sunday will be sunny with temperatures cooler by the lake. Areas near the shoreline will stay below 60 degrees while the rest of the Northland warms to the upper 60s and low 70s. Similar conditions are in store for Memorial Day.
A Planned Parenthood affiliate plans to close 4 clinics in Iowa and another 4 in Minnesota

Four of the six Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa and four in Minnesota will shut down in a year, the Midwestern affiliate operating them said Friday, blaming a freeze in federal funds, budget cuts proposed in Congress, and state restrictions on abortion. The clinics closing in Iowa include the only Planned Parenthood facility in the state that provides abortion procedures, in Ames, home to Iowa State University.
