But which will make the cut? There are so many choices now for every dietary preference it can be hard to narrow down.

    Friday morning on Clapham High Street and, standing outside a recently opened Popeyes restaurant, I’m close to sensory overload. In quick succession I’ve been hit by the luminous bright orange signage; the smell of fried chicken; a wall of bassy music as I open the door and an ever so slight greasiness to the air as I walk in. I’m here to spend the day at the American fried chicken chain that has burst beyond national borders.

    A dog’s unfaltering delight at the exact same activity, day in day out, is part of what owners love about their dogs. But more than that, it poses an interesting philosophical question. At least, it does if you are Mark Rowlands, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Miami. Rowlands would watch his dog Shadow delight every day in chasing the same iguanas that perched along the canal behind their house.

    Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK, and nearly a million people in the UK are currently living with it. Much needed treatments are finally arriving like new drugs lecanemab and donanemab – but not yet available on the NHS. However, dementia isn’t inevitable. At the end of July, 27 of the world’s leading experts published a landmark paper saying that almost half of worldwide dementia cases could in fact be prevented and delayed.

    Nut butters, jams, and spreads both sweet and savoury are quick, tasty, and made for morning toast. It’s unsurprising they rank among Brits’ most popular breakfasts. But working out which ones are worth it isn’t always so easy. There are some that claim to be healthy, boasting high vitamin content or healthy fats, and there are others that make no attempts to sugarcoat (sorry) their lack of nutritional value.
