PA WirePeople are concerned that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the NHS could lead to clinicians missing errors, according to a new survey. Almost two thirds of NHS workers also voiced worries that using AI will distance them from patients. The technology could play a “significant role” in easing pressure on the health service, according to think tank The Health Foundation, which carried out the poll, although “some remain unconvinced”.

While the Prime Minister’s general election announcement took almost everyone by surprise, the focus on the NHS so early in the campaign won’t have come as a shock - especially to trust leaders. Poll after poll has confirmed that ‘fixing’ the NHS is voters’ top concern. One week into the campaign and the health service, unsurprisingly, found itself front and centre of the debate with political parties already pledging to cut waiting times and improve access to treatment.

There are now 1.9 million people waiting for mental health care in England, according to the latest official figures published this week. But as the waiting list just captures those who have been referred, that’s only part of the story. Of those counted, almost half a million are children – an 80 per cent increase since 2019. Urgent referrals for adults have shot up by more than 82 per cent since the pandemic, and 155 per cent for children and young people.

The failure of the Government to deliver on its previously-promised pledge to ban conversion therapy has been branded “an act of frightful negligence”. Campaigners had been hoping to hear mention of a Bill on the matter in the King’s Speech. The ban was first promised by Theresa May’s government in 2018, before it was downgraded to not include transgender people by Boris Johnson.

Hospitals must do more to provide effective care for people with learning disabilities, the patient safety body has said. The Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) said the current system can cause distress and confusion for patients, as well as elevating the risk of harm. An HSSIB probe looked at how information about patients with learning disabilities is shared following admission to hospital, and how staff are supported to deliver their care.

Both sets of staff took joint action earlier this month for the first time in the history of the NHS. Doctors are fed up of being told we are the problem with the NHSSince the strikes began, the cumulative total of acute inpatient and outpatient appointments having to be rescheduled has exceeded a million. The industrial action earlier this month led to almost 130,000 inpatient and outpatient appointments being rescheduled.
