It can be hard for an anime to keep its quality up from season to season. Anime like Solo Leveling or Demon Slayer that seem to get better over time are far from the norm. Most series have peaks and valleys, resulting in some seasons being stronger than others. Yet there are some series which suffer an even worse fate. Some series start off with an incredible opening season and never actually improve after. Sometimes the first season was simply a creative peak they couldn't hit again.

In the world of Mobile Suit Gundam, everything comes down to having the right pilot — and the right mecha. Though piloting skills always win out, its no coincidence the main characters frequently have the most powerful mobile suit. These Gundams often help keep inexperienced pilots alive long enough until they develop their real skill. Since the Universal Century progresses in a mostly linear fashion, it's usually guaranteed each new suit is better designed than the last.

While mecha franchises have been known to rely on younger protagonists, few franchises utilize them as much as Gundam. While many mecha series prefer characters in their late teens, Gundam has been known to have protagonists who are 15 and younger. Though it stretches believability, it also makes every battle feel that much more real and dangerous.

The Spring anime season has arrived, and it's filled with some amazing series. Old series like Fire Force are making a comeback, while highly-anticipated anime like Witch Watch and Lazarus are releasing too, taking up most fans' attention. With dozens of series on the way, it's easy to only get caught up on the biggest and most well-known series.
