1 INTRODUCTION An epicuticular wax layer coating the above-ground organs is distributed almost ubiquitously in the plant kingdom (Kong et al., 2020), including in mosses (Proctor, 1979), ferns (Guo et al., 2018), gymnosperms (Oros et al., 1999) and angiosperms (Lee & Suh, 2015). Decades of research on plant epicuticular waxes have led to a comprehensive understanding of their biosynthesis, transport and regulation (Aharoni et al., 2004; Daszkowska-Golec, 2020; Seo et al., 2011).
