Americans hold complex views on what should happen to undocumented immigrants. As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to ramp up mass deportations, about three-quarters of U.S. adults say they are about the number of immigrants entering the country illegally, and a majority support enforcing mass deportation. Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand Americans’ views on immigration and immigration policy prior to the 2024 presidential election.

Data in this report comes from Wave 151 of the American Trends Panel (ATP), Pew Research Center’s nationally representative panel of randomly selected U.S. adults. The survey was conducted from Aug. 5 to Aug. 11, 2024. A total of 9,201 panelists responded out of 10,079 who were sampled, for a survey-level response rate of 91%. The cumulative response rate accounting for nonresponse to the recruitment surveys and attrition is 3%.
