Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is giving a friendly reminder to landowners to continue to undertake possum control as it is their responsibility, but not everyone is doing it. Contracts manager for pest animals Allan Beer told BayBuzz the possum control programme has been in place for 23 years. “Thanks to the hard work of farmers and contractors, the possum population has been maintained at very low levels,” Beer said.

    The HB Emergency Relief Fund was designed to help Hawke’s Bay communities, individuals, families, community organisations and marae get immediate access to funds to assist with recovery. Its one-off payments were to help alleviate hardship experienced due to the flooding, prolonged power outages and landslips. And for the rural community, applications could be extended to provide some assistance for emergency fencing requirements for livestock and disposal of dead stock.

    Health Minister Shane Reti has successfully scrapped the Māori Health Authority and next on his hit list is ceasing work on health ‘localities’, one of which is in Wairoa. In Cabinet papers Reti stated ‘localities’, when introduced in 2022, were intended to allow the specific needs and aspirations of a particular community to be identified and met, with robust engagement with the community concerned.

The Manaora Rangatahi Guidelines is part of Nourishing Hawke’s Bay: He wairua tō te kai, a collaborative local project between EIT | Te Pūkenga and University of Auckland (UoA).
