There’s an old wooden computer desk on our terrace at Comini. We had square holes cut out to put in two Ikea trays — I forget why. Those trays are no longer in, so what we have is a table with two large holes at the top and a small rectangular one at the back, the one used to pass wires through. And this is somehow the favorite setting and stage — in a place overflowing with playthings of every kind — for kids to transform with their imagination.

Our washing machine started leaking the other day. We'd find puddles pooling near its legs. The puddles started getting bigger. The electrician we called over suggested a relatively expensive gasket change. The cynic in me, who has been right on occasion about this, assumed it was one of those unnecessary fixes for a smaller problem. But then what do I know about washing machines? Nothing. So we went ahead and made the change. And sure enough, it started leaking again. Not puddles, but trickles.

My wife and I run a micro-school in Mumbai, India. We recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Our kids go there along with 15 others. As we like to joke, we are doing small-batch, locally sourced, artisanal education. I also run a tech startup where we are building a product in the learning space. Both of these were born as a result of the pandemic when schools shut down and we saw up close what happens in the name of education.
