My very own Organ Pipes. This tree stump sits at the shore of a dam, and as I pass it often several times a day, I am reminded of the annual event and what it means to so many, all around the world. This year will add even more to that, including the two souls we commemorate at this time.

2024 Sydney Hobart – Doors open!

The River Derwent has the doors open with good, solid, North to Westerly breezes of 10-20 knots blowing all the way from Tasman Island to Ye Olde Hobart Town. This is a good thing, as there is a queue of vessels keen to get in after the blow and then the frustration of soft, and often vague and variable conditions that ensued.

2024 Sydney Hobart – Mini Maxi

It was back in The Traditional Hobart that we pondered if 2024 was indeed going to be the year of the mini maxi. Well, it is. Celestial V70 will be the overall champion under IRC, and by definition, also Div0.
The TPs and brethren 52-footers like Caro have served it up well, but horsepower has won the day.

2024 Sydney Hobart – An afternoon jam session

As LawConnect makes her way ever closer to the finish at Battery Point in the 2024 Sydney Hobart and claim Line Honours, there is the matter of just under 200nm to cover, as at the time of writing.
Now she is almost abeam Bicheno in a very pretty part of Tasmania (and yes, there are many on the Apple Isle).

It’s in the name. Belting downhill is just plain brutal on boats. Heaps of fun, but everything and everyone is doing it, well, hard.
Rudder bearings can leak and then it can from bad to worse. Steering gets snapped, bent, or fails. Boats stop when they hit the next wave, but the rigs keep on going.

2024 Sydney Hobart – Great viewing

The tacking duel down Sydney Harbour was exciting. LawConnect went for bragging rights and got them, for first out the Heads. Comanche had to pinch to make the clear space she so desperately needs, and Celestial 70 was showing her intentions early by being third out, with URM right on her tail, and then Whisper followed.
