Salvatore R. Mercogliano, Ph.D. – The Navy oiler – a tanker designed to refuel other ships while at sea – shuddered from the hit. Almost immediately, water began to flood into the engine room and at least one of the ship’s rudders was out of service. The damage and flow of water proved challenging for the crew. As the only US Navy fuel ship in the area capable of supporting a carrier strike group came to a stop, the vulnerability of the thin lifeline of American afloat logistics became apparent.

It is not clear from this video whether the fires started by the #Houthis will consume and burn the crude oil on board. You can see some of it on fire pouring into the sea. It will take satellite photos to determine if the oil is spilling, being burned up, or sinking. — Sal Mercogliano (WGOW Shipping) 🚢⚓🐪🚒🏴☠️ (@mercoglianos) August 23, 2024

By Salvatore R. Mercogliano, Ph.D. (Opinion) – Maersk Gibraltar is not a remarkable containership for 2023. She pales at 10,100 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) compared to the ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) of nearly 24,000 TEUs. Built in 2016 at Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding, the ship is Hong Kong-flagged, owned by Greater China Intermodal Investments, and operated by Maersk Lines of Denmark.

By Salvatore R. Mercogliano, Ph.D. –When Russia invaded Ukraine early on February 24, 2022, many predicted a short conflict. Russia drove on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv from Belarus, while other forces took over the Donbas region with the aim to annex these territories and seize a land bridge to Crimea. The former had been obtained by Russia in 2014.
