    In the fragmented reality of Palestine, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip stand isolated, their connection severed. From my home in Ramallah, which is only 37 miles from Gaza, the gap feels huge due to Israeli restrictions that make short distances insurmountable. My friend Huda Amer, a fellow journalist, and I endure this reality, with our connection limited to infrequent, intermittent phone calls amid the ongoing bombardment.

There's a common Palestinian phrase that goes "For each baby, there's a shoulder to find rest."However, as Israel intensifies its collective punishment against Gaza, this saying finds itself shattered amidst the ravages of war.

    Hanan Daoud Mikhael Ashrawi, perhaps the most visible face of Palestine after the late Yasser Arafat, was the official spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). A Palestinian Christian, she represented Jerusalem in the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996 and was re-elected in 2006. In 2020, Ashrawi resigned in protest against the Palestinian Authority’s decision to renew security coordination with Israel.

And it is not just children who are being marked for identification. Amid fears of being interred in unmarked graves, adults too are ensuring that they carry some form of identification on their person.
