    Downtown’s Boulder Theater has been a city treasure for 90 years, but recently, its striking Art Deco facade has been in danger of crumbling from water damage. Now, a new fundraising campaign is underway to restore it. The “Save the Face” campaign, spearheaded by Historic Boulder, has already raised most of the approximately $500,000 needed, with half of the projected repair costs covered by in-house and corporate donations, as well as a Colorado State Historical Fund grant.

    There aren’t many old-time barbershops left like Alpine Barbers, located at 1215 Alpine Ave. in North Boulder’s Ideal shopping center. When it closes on Oct. 25 after losing its lease, Boulder will have one fewer place where someone can just walk in without an appointment and walk out with a simple, clean, traditional cut.

    Sometimes it seems that every time you turn around in Boulder, one restaurant closes and another opens. The latest to venture onto Boulder’s dicey restaurant scene is Cozobi Fonda Fina at 909 Walnut Street, in the space that was briefly occupied by Oaxaca-themed Masas & Agaves. Cozobi owner and chef Johnny Curiel took over Masas’ lease in late May, naming his new restaurant after the god of corn in Mexico’s indigenous Zapotec language to highlight the importance of corn in his menu.

    A gourmet vegan restaurant, Avant Garden Bistro, may be opening in Boulder by late spring or early summer, located in part of the space formerly occupied by The Mediterranean Restaurant on Walnut Street. ”Construction is complete. It’s just a matter of licensing and permitting,” said Greg Topel, CEO of Boulder’s EVG Hospitality, which holds the long-term managing contract for the owner, New York’s Overthrow Hospitality.
