Many elephants have called Perth Zoo home over the past 50 years. But by mid-2025, the two resident elephants, Permai and Putras Mas, will move to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. Their relocation will take them to a larger enclosure and more elephant friends. Perth Zoo is currently preparing to make their journey as smooth as possible. Melbourne Zoo is preparing to move its Asian elephant herd to Werribee Open Range Zoo for the same reasons.

Spain’s overtourism woes have been making headlines for some time now. The that saw tourists’ needs prioritised over those of locals; a housing crisis exacerbated by the proliferation of Airbnb holiday rentals; protests that have seen beaches occupied and Barcelona diners squirted with water pistols – all of these give rise to the impression that Spain is bursting at the seams, a pressure cooker of irate residents ready to explode.

Trojan Unicorn by Becky Minto (designer), Scott Bisset (build and design) and Kate Bonney (Lighting designer). Photo by Bart MasiukiewiczThe first person to grasp the marketing potential of the unicorn seems to have been King James I of Scotland. Kidnapped by the English as an 11-year-old in 1406, he wasn’t released for eighteen years. When he assumed the throne, he placed a pair of rampant unicorns on his new coat of arms.

AMR already claims over a million lives annually worldwide, and a study published in the Lancet this week shows that by 2050, AMR-related deaths will increase by almost two-thirds, with an estimated 39 million lives lost. Around 10 kilometres off the coast of Freo lies a secluded island teeming with wildlife. (No, it’s not Rotto and you won’t want a selfie with these creatures.)The 19-hectare island has calm waters for snorkelling and is a rest area for Australian sea lions. The catch? You need to share it with hundreds of the world’s deadliest snake species. SNAKE-INFESTEDCarnac Island is teeming with tiger snakes – an estimated 20 adult snakes per hectare with a total population of up to 400.

Marina's writing stretches what you think memoir can do. It springs from the intimate but reaches towards the universal; shrewd, expressive and always unexpected, you never know where a sentence will take you. Friends in Oz, be sure to catch her wonderful self in the flesh!

Off to @SydWritersFest tomorrow, then on to Melbourne. So here's a call out to anyone in Melbourne who liked #TheMiddlepause or #Insomnia – please come along to this event at Avenue Bookstore on 6th May. https://t.co/fHU8qYihRw
