There are several mysteries in Sally Hepworth's new novel, DARLING GIRLS. The first, and the vehicle she uses to bring the main characters back to their childhood foster home of nightmares, is the bones found buried under the large farmhouse where they lived. Holly Fairchild --- Miss Fairchild to Jessica, Norah and Alicia --- took in foster children. It was decades later, when she sold the home and it was demolished, that the bones were found.

Watching my grandson count the ants and ask to hear the rhythmic text again was joyous together time! It's filled with fun, and we just want to keep turning the pages to see what's next. As a picture book author myself, I appreciate these unique books that have layers of offerings. There's wordplay, friendship and working together, rhyming text, great illustrations, humor, AND math!

Reading about dysfunctional families is one of my absolute favourite pastimes, especially when the setting is just as creepy and unsettling as the story itself. For my latest book, The Soulmate, the cliffside setting overlooking the ocean was inspired by a well-known suicide spot in Sydney, Australia. I like to think that, in the book, the cliff becomes almost a character in itself – and that’s how I feel about some of these deliciously twisty crime reads.
