    Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner has launched classes that will be offered to high school students for $30 each, including books. The program, created through the Commonwealth Dual Enrollment Partnership (CDEP) at Mount Wachusett Community College, will allow students to enroll in courses for $30 using grant funds to cover the extra costs. These classes include English composition, introduction to psychology and strategic management.

    Bankers in Central Massachusetts are keeping one eye on the local economy for signs of recovery and the other on Washington for signs of trouble. Income statements for area financial institutions have improved significantly over the past three years, and banks across the region dodged a bullet when House and Senate leaders this month agreed to a deal that would avert budget gridlock in 2014. Bank executives expect a steady rebound in 2014, unless changes in federal policy manage to muck things up.

As the economy continues to bounce back from the Great Recession, freight transportation is growing as well, bringing more goods of all kinds through the region on the rails — everything from cars and toilet paper to flammable liquids and hazardous materials.

    The largest solar array ever to be situated over a brownfield in Massachusetts has been completed and is now set to serve Central Massachusetts communities and organizations. The 6 MW solar array was built at the Palmer Airfield by Borrego Solar, Syncarpha Capital and Renewable Energy Massachusetts. The array was part of the airport's cleanup operations.
