Two years ago, I started co-hosting the High School Scoreboard Show on 92.9 The Game with Chris Parker on Friday nights. One of our first guests was Creekside head coach Maurice Dixon. He talked about his team setting a goal of playing in the 15th game. This year his team has made it to the biggest game of the season and needless to say it’s a different kind of week in Fairburn. There will be no game this Friday night, as the Seminoles will play in the Class 5A championship game on Wednesday.

I journeyed to the southside Monday evening and felt the temperature drop as the jets climbed into the sky from nearby Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The Woodward Academy War Eagles were hard at work with head coach John Hunt. It’s the week of the 14th game of the season and his team is still playing. “What has given us a lot of consistency through the years is defense,” says Hunt. ”It has been our anchor this year. This year we have been fighting the injury bug.

Last Friday night Commerce beat Jasper County 58-19 in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs. The Tigers are 11-1 and enjoying a season that has been three years in the making. When I caught up with head coach Mark Hollars on Sunday evening, I got the feeling that the victory celebration didn’t last very long. "We’re playing a bunch of kids right now that have been in our system," says Hollars. "They understand what is expected of them and they have had a lot of reps at it.

With their preseason goal of a region championship sitting before them, the Arabia Mountain Rams were not about to miss their big chance. As it turned out, the final game of the regular season would require overtime. These Rams would not fold against one of DeKalb County’s flagship programs, outlasting Tucker 24-23. It fulfilled a goal of both the team and head coach Julian Washington. “That has been the goal ever since we got here, to win the region,” says Washington.

I drove over to Douglasville this week to get a look at the Douglas County Tigers. After last week’s win over Newnan they are 9-0 and region champs for the first time since 2002. But Coach Johnny White is not ready to celebrate. “Let’s Outwork Yesterday,” says White, quoting the theme for his team. “If they had a a good day today, they come in tomorrow and outwork Monday. Come back in on Wednesday and outwork Tuesday.”The Tigers are a perfect reflection of their coach.

Two games into the 2023-24 NBA regular season, the Atlanta Hawks (0-2) are still looking for their first win of the season and are headed to Milwaukee for a Sunday night matchup with perennial championship contender Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks are led on the court by a championship caliber duo in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian "Dame" Lillard, and the Hawks will counter with their duo of All Star backcourt guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

When schedules were released, the casual observer would see last Friday’s matchup between Wheeler and Osborne as a meeting of a basketball school against school that had never played in a football state playoff game. To have dismissed the game as nothing special would have been a colossal mistake. What transpired had all the trappings of an old-school title fight. You know, the ones that used to last 15 rounds. When the varsity football and girl's flag football teams from Atlanta's Booker T. Washington High School boarded buses after school, they thought they were going to have a meal together. Imagine their surprise when they ended up in the parking lot of Dick's Sporting Goods in Buckhead. Then it happened. Atlanta Falcons star Calais Campbell emerged from the store to greet them and he received a round of applause.

The Peachtree Ridge Lions have started the 2023 season 7-0 in just the second year of Matt Helmerich’s tenure as head coach. “I knew we had some talent,” said Helmerich. “Just being able to put it together and see the kids get better every week. Going back to January, we were fighting them tooth and nail. We have to do it our way and this is how we’re going to work out. This is how we are going to play multiple sports.
