The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said that memecoins are not subject to regulatory oversight because they are not considered securities. In reaching its conclusion, the SEC relied on a nearly century-old U.S. Supreme Court decision to determine that a memecoin should not be considered an investment contract and therefore subject to regulatory oversight.

Annuity sales data from Wink showed that sales of traditional variable annuities were stronger than for any other class of tracked annuities in the fourth quarter. Sales of traditional variable annuities increased 53% between the fourth quarter of 2023 and the fourth quarter of 2024, to $18 billion. Sales of registered index-linked annuities increased 38%, to $35 billion.

Principal Asset Management has appointed Brant Wong as head of retirement solutions, a newly created role in which he will lead retirement investment product strategy across Principal’s asset management and U.S. retirement businesses. Wong previously served as head of retirement platforms at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, where he spent 23 years. His appointment follows Deanna Strable assuming the role of CEO on January 7.

Registered representatives in the securities industry are trending toward dual registration, according to a report from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). The number of dually registered individuals climbed to 319,597 in 2023, up from 295,670 in 2019, according to FINRA's data. The number of individuals registered only as broker-dealer reps, meanwhile, has dropped to 308,975 as of last year.
