Labour has dropped its plans for five local grooming gang inquiries that it promised in January when under pressure, saying it’s now up to local councils to decide how to spend the £5 million allocated. The Telegraph has the story. In January, Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, told MPs that the Government would provide £5 million to support up to five initial local inquiries modelled on the judge-led one into grooming gangs in Telford.

The UK Government is developing a pre-crime ‘murder prediction’ programme which it hopes can use personal data of those known to the authorities to identify the people most likely to become killers. The Guardian has more. Researchers are alleged to be using algorithms to analyse the information of thousands of people, including victims of crime, as they try to identify those at greatest risk of committing serious violent offences.
