ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR) - Approximately 10,000 people across parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee experienced power outages following Wednesday's storms, according to Appalachian Power. As of 3 p.m. Thursday, around 3,500 of those people were still without power as restoration times have been delayed in some areas due to heavy rain and strong winds.

(WFXR) — Awareness surrounding head injuries resulting from contact sports has grown in recent years as more data has emerged highlighting the dangers of these impacts, particularly in football. Virginia Tech is working to make the sport safer with its helmet lab program. Established 15 years ago, the helmet lab now focuses on limiting head injuries that could occur in several sports and activities such as football, hockey, biking, snowboarding, and construction work.

Former NFL and Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett tragically died on June 27, 2023, at the age of 35. He drowned while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida. Mallett was pronounced dead at a local hospital after being transported from the beach. Mallett played college football at the University of Arkansas, where he was a two-year starter and led the Razorbacks to an SEC championship game appearance in 2011.
