Twenty years ago, the concept of a musician “making it big” without ever leaving their bedroom would seem ludicrous. However, with the advent of social media, the possibility of achieving mainstream success without access to a recording studio or a major label has given rise to a genre known as bedroom pop. James Burgos, also known as Lames, is a third-year marketing major at San Diego State University, and his self-produced bedroom tracks have earned him 358k monthly listeners on Spotify.

Everyone has a passion, but not everyone may realize it. For some, passions can be obscured by our everyday routines, and those routines can feel impossible to break out of. San Diego State University has earned the nickname “rage state” for its lively party scene. The abundant nightlife means that forming a band and playing at house shows is a feasible reality for SDSU students. Katie Thomas, a music business and criminal justice major at SDSU, has proven that forming a band is not only feasible, but it can be a very meaningful part of the college experience.

One of the foremost skills involved in creating music is lyric writing, and the ability to write meaningful lyrics allows artists to connect to audiences on an intimate level. Matty Thomas, a first-year English major at San Diego State University, finds that his studies translate directly into his ability to write music.

Learning an art form can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Many people who are self-taught may feel encouraged to seek formal training in a skill, allowing them to express themselves in ways they may not have been able to without input. However, others may find formal instruction discouraging. For Bryce Stanic, a third year music major at San Diego State University, a negative experience with formal teaching fueled his passion for making his own music by his own rules.
