SSL have chosen not to build mic preamps into their new Alpha 8 ADAT expander — but they have included a whole heap of other features. Over the last few years, Solid State Logic’s product designers have displayed two admirable features: a focus on innovation, and joined‑up thinking. Recent products of theirs have stood out from the crowd, whilst at the same time fitting neatly into a wider ecosystem.

In the early years of this century, it seemed as though a different major studio was closing down every week. It was also a lean time for the manufacturers of high‑end mixers and rackmounting gear. The ‘project studios’ that were pushing aside traditional recording spaces didn’t need or want large‑format consoles, or racks of hardware effects. The expectation in many quarters was that this trend would continue more or less indefinitely.

A hit movie about the world’s greatest rock band turns conventional ideas of audio restoration on their head. “In the early stages of making the film, we met with extraordinary resistance to the concept of playing whole songs,” says Bernard MacMahon. “People were just like, ‘No‑one’s going to be interested in that!’ But if you think that the story of this band is worth you sitting in a theatre for two hours, then I believe you’ve goddamn got to play a whole lot of that music.

This modern take on a vintage germanium preamp offers bucketloads of character. SoundGas will be well known to British readers as one of the country’s leading specialists in vintage gear, especially old tape and disc echo units. Their USP is to offer comprehensively refurbished equipment, backed by a warranty and service options. They’re rarely the cheapest option, but when you’re spending thousands, this sort of peace of mind is invaluable.

With their latest Quantum interfaces, PreSonus have swapped Thunderbolt for USB. Do they still maintain the same advantages? When PreSonus first attached the name Quantum to a 1U audio interface, it was not short of unique selling points. Back in 2017, Quantums (or should that be Quanta?) connected to the host computer over Thunderbolt, and took full advantage of that protocol’s special powers.

I would have loved to have used this artwork for the show, but we thought it might be a bit much for some of the platforms.

Thanks to my bestie and @SM_SuperNetwork podcast co-host @supermarcey for creating the official artwork for the show just as she has with the other BVTLD network shows. Plus, thanks for making this alternative artwork (which won’t be using sadly) for mine and Sam’s amusement! 😁 https://t.co/lTUWX4skkU

Very excited to get started on this (we already have a few episodes in the can). It's going to be a fun journey through some occasionally pretty fucked up films, with some great guests joining us.

Hey, gang! My friend @24FPSUK and I have a new podcast together that’ll be released as part of the @BedeVsTLD network called BEDE & SAM VS. THE VIDEO NASTIES, which we dive into the Britain’s video nasty lists. I can’t wait for you all to listen in to this show in December! 😀

1: That's hideous 2: Nice fucking spoiler
