    This weekend’s Pittsburgh Symphony program presented three works in reverse chronological order. Returning to the Heinz Hall podium was guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, substituting for the originally scheduled Cristian Mӑcelaru. Opening the evening was the 2021 work Sprout by Sean Shepherd in what was essentially its first live performance. Sprout was written for California’s Cabrillo Festival.

    A few days before the Phoenix Symphony’s Saturday evening performance, my travels through Arizona brought me to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was with those sprawling, surreal vistas still fresh in memory that I approached their performance of Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite. Written almost a century ago – mere seconds in the geologic time of the ancient canyon – it was once a mainstay of American orchestral music, but seems to have somewhat fallen out of vogue in recent years.

    Season after season, there’s few things I look forward to more than a solo piano recital from Evgeny Kissin. The present offering traversed repertoire from the Baroque to the 20th century, drawing a substantial and enthusiastic crowd to Severance Hall on a Wednesday evening. Bach’s Partita no. 2 in C minor opened. Bold and coloristic, the introductory Sinfonia made for the most dramatic of beginnings.

With a slew of updated radiology equipment, Fillmore Community Hospital continues to offer services to patients commonly seen in more metropolitan areas. The hospital received new x-ray, CT, mammography, and ultrasound equipment in September, and a bone density scanning machine, DEXA, within the past year as well.
