No. 11 Virginia Tech softball has grown accustomed to winning, just by nature of how the last month-plus has gone. At various points through the last 39 days, eight different teams tried and failed to score more runs than the Hokies, to no avail. However, Pitt figured out how to sneak past them for a 7-6 win in nine innings on Thursday. It marked Tech’s first loss since March 9 — snapping a 17-game winning streak. “We fought,” Virginia Tech right fielder Cori McMillan told Tech Sideline.

Virginia Tech softball will look to elongate its 17-game winning streak this week during its road trip to Pittsburgh. The Hokies (36-5, 14-1 ACC) sit No. 10 in the NFCA rankings, No. 11 in ESPN/USA Softball, No. 12 in D1Softball and No. 13 in Softball America. They rose one spot in the former three polls and remained the same in the latter. Tech is also 12th in the RPI. Pitt is not ranked in any polls. The Panthers (15-26, 4-14) are No. 127 in the RPI.

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors recently abandoned plans to establish a Student Life Village and renovate Slusher Hall. The Student Life Village would have utilized part of the on-campus golf course and supported recreation, residential and well-being facilities for the university’s Blacksburg campus. The plan would have resulted in 1,700 additional beds for the student population. On Nov. 13, 2022, the Board of Visitors adopted a “master plan” to establish the Student Life Village.

Nobody knew Athletes Unlimited would announce it would draft Virginia Tech pitcher Emma Lemley after the Hokies’ 15-1 run-rule win over Notre Dame on Sunday night. Well, that’s not entirely true. Members of Tech’s support staff did. Head coach Pete D’Amour did. And pitcher Cassie Grizzard did — and was tasked with ensuring Lemley was visible to cameras. But Lemley, most of the players and the fans at Tech Softball Park had no idea.

No team in the country has currently won more games in a row than Virginia Tech softball. No team in the country has tossed more shutouts, either. The No. 12 Hokies (35-5, 13-1 ACC) handled Notre Dame in both games of a doubleheader at Tech Softball Park on Saturday — 5-0 and 12-4 (in five innings) — to clinch their fifth ACC series win of 2025. In the process, they earned their 16th consecutive victory and 18th shutout of the season.
