The right post was a friend of Riley Shearer on Tuesday night — enough of a friend to launch Mills E. Godwin girls soccer past Douglas S. Freeman, 2-1, and into the Class 5 state tournament. The senior received a pass from defender Samantha Lionberger with eight minutes remaining to the left of the opposing 18-yard box. She dribbled the ball and sent it too far to the left for Freeman goalie Chloe Morris to grab it, but not so far that it rolled out of bounds.

Advancing past a regional is really, really hard. Virginia Tech softball has not done so in the past three seasons, the result of its 3-2 loss to No. 15 Alabama on Sunday — in which a few aspects of the regional final broke in the Crimson Tide’s direction, culminating in the end of the season. Alabama (40-21) notched all three of its runs in the fifth inning while its starting pitcher, Catelyn Riley, shut down the Hokies (43-14) for 6 ⅓ frames.

Virginia Tech softball kept its season alive on Saturday following a loss to No. 15 Alabama with a win over Belmont. The Hokies (43-12) and Crimson Tide (39-21) advanced to the Tuscaloosa Regional final. Tech has to win twice to advance to a super regional, while Alabama only needs one victory. Like in the 2024 season, Tech dropped the first game in the winners’ bracket to the top-seeded team — then-No. 6 UCLA in 2024 and the Crimson Tide in 2025.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Virginia Tech pitching coach Josh Johnson went to the circle to talk to pitcher Emma Lemley after she walked the bases loaded. “[Johnson said] basically just to calm down,” Lemley said. “He brought me a towel and he was like, ‘Eh, just take a minute.’ I locked back in. I was probably on a nine and I needed to be on a five on that scale, so I just had to calm down and not try to throw 70 [mph].

The Hokies (41-11) will face Belmont on Friday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+. If they win, they will face the winner of No. 15 Alabama vs. Jackson State on Saturday at noon.
