When the German rider Franziska Koch began sprinting for the finish line in the Belgian town of Binche, the woman she expected to shoot past was the team-mate she was leading out, Charlotte Kool. The Dutch sprinter was in the perfect position to claim this month’s Binche-Chimay-Binche one-day race as a group of six entered the town’s cobbled Grand Place. But the rider who appeared on Koch’s shoulder wasn’t Kool.

Remember who won Britain’s first medal of the London 2012 Olympics? You may recall a rain-soaked Lizzie Armitstead sprinting to a gutsy silver in the women’s road race, denied gold on the Mall by the Dutch cycling great Marianne Vos. The memory is so clear for Pfeiffer Georgi that she can even tell you where she was, despite being only 11 at the time.

For the world’s best time-trial cyclists waiting on the Olympic starting ramp on the Esplanade des Invalides next Saturday, the flat 32.4km journey ahead of them is a potential road to gold and glory. Some have ambitions for a medal; for a few of the 35 contenders, only the Olympic title will be good enough. For one rider, though, the real achievement is just being there at all.

Just like last year, one of the Tour de France’s two leading protagonists of recent years is coming into the race off the back of an injury. Molly Caudery once again proved why she is a contender for the Olympic pole vault title after breaking the British record with the seventh-highest clearance of all time. Caudery, the world indoor champion, grazed the bar as she went over at 4.92m to win the Toulouse Capitole Perche pole vault street event in a damp city centre. It is the world-leading height this year and would have won gold at every Olympics except one since 2000, when women’s pole vault was first held.

Not watching the game but reading that Trent was booed is really disappointing - if you're one of the ones doing that you need to have a word with yourself. The lad's won everything, given everything on the field, and wants to try something new. Don't be so bloody selfish.

On the way to Wembley for the FA Vase final - a club that was only formed 4 years ago from the ashes of Whyteleafe FC, now about to play in a game its predecessor never managed. And a Surrey/Kent derby against Whitstable too. Huge! @AFCWhyteleafe #NonLeagueFinalsDay

You'd have got a great price on Southampton being the only home team in the Premier League not to lose today when they were playing actual Man City https://t.co/jWHo21QN1i
