    Since the start of the 2024-25 school year, Miami University has succumbed to substantial, and often controversial, changes. Administration increased faculty workload, a new arena will dominate student gathering spaces and changes to higher education in Ohio will no doubt be felt from Columbus to Oxford. Yet, someone passing through campus would have no clue of the physical and institutional changes that will soon descend upon Miami.

    Each year since 1970, people across the globe have banded together to celebrate our planet on April 22, better known as Earth Day. While some confine themselves to just one day, Miami University students are able to celebrate for a week. Miami’s 2025 Earth Week will be from April 21-27, culminating in the annual Earth Fest in Uptown Oxford on April 26. Before that, the week will be filled with sustainability-focused events for students to attend across campus.

    The first few months of President Donald Trump’s second term have come a flurry of government workforce layoffs, agency downsizing and federal grant slashings. One of the most hard hit areas of the government has been recreation and conservation, with agencies such as the National Park Service and Forest Service experiencing layoffs and budget cuts.

    Miami University has set lofty goals to reach carbon neutrality by 2040, including funding renewable energy projects and constructing more environmentally-friendly buildings. These do well to reduce carbon use on campus, but lurking beyond the brick buildings and tree-lined paths are emissions that students are forced into from the second they step on campus, and which neither they nor Miami have full control over.
