Garlin Gilchrist would mean the first time a Black man has held the position in Michigan. Either would be the fourth Black governor elected in U.S. history. Wes Moore was elected governor of Maryland in 2022. Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, a Democrat, was elected in 1990. And Democrat Deval Patrick was elected in 2007.

The campaign follows a detailed report on the prevalence of gambling across Liverpool, as well as the harms that are associated with it in what Liverpool City Council described as an “under-researched issue”.

The field of Democratic candidates seeking to replace term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is taking shape. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson launched her campaign last month, while Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, also of Detroit, is expected to announce his own bid.
